Battle in the Dark Castle
With trusted spell book in hand
I approach the dark castle
To confront the evil beast
That dwells within those black walls.
Set to face a dreadful foe
I pit white magic against
Demonic diablerie.

Many malevolent runes
Guard the heavy oaken door.
Brilliant purifying flames
Erase the malignant script
And break the fell enchantments.
I enter the gaping maw;
The blackness devours me.

Bathed in a gleaming aura
I cross the gloomy courtyard;
Nightmares emerge from the murk.
A rabble of obscene fiends
Closes in all around me.
I call down a thunderbolt
To disperse the loathsome mob.

Deeper in the black bowels
Of that infernal fortress
My greatest fears are made flesh.
A squirming carpet of snakes
Slithers across the flagstone,
Striking at my booted toes.
I fly through the serpents' den.

As I draw nearer my goal
Voices echo in my head.
Abject terror chills my soul.
Tendrils of the devil's mind
Probe my hidden thoughts and doubts.
Resolved to retain free will
I drive the shadows away.

Armed with my power and faith
I descend a timeworn stair.
Beneath the grim massive keep
The damp air reeks of decay.
Malice bears down upon me
Like the earthen weight of death.
I struggle to move forward.

Within the dark undercroft
A great monstrosity stirs.
Blazing orbs glare hatefully.
Angered by my intrusion
Into his hellish domain,
The beast prepares to destroy
My senescent mortal shell.

The demon leers wickedly
And raises his poisoned scourge.
My staff parries the harsh blows
And I break the bladed thongs.
Then the beast spits toxic spume.
I conjure up a deluge
To wash the foul filth away.

My foe summons his brethren
From the fiery depths of Hell.
A crack opens in the floor;
The crypt erupts into flames.
I invoke Heaven's true light
To dispel the growing horde;
They flee back into the pit.

Wearied from the savage fray
I drag myself slowly back
Up those decrepit stone steps
Toward dawn's welcome glimmer.
I shuffle back to my cot
And fall into a deep sleep
'Til the beast returns to Earth
Once more.
